HOMESTEAD
FARM

Rev. John & Janie Wallace
Located in the heart of the  Endless Mountains Region of northeastern Pennsylvania, the Wallace
Homestead Farm is a welcome retreat and respite from the grind of modern life. Nestled amid the
serenity of rolling mountain farmland of
Sullivan & Bradford Counties our family, friends and
visitors enjoy their farm life experiences during their visits and retreats to our farm.
Visitors enjoy  weekend summer visits and participate in farm chores providing the children with a
taste of country life. Family, friends, and visitors have traveled from as far as Ontario and North
Carolina for visits and to experience farm life.  Our cattle are all tame and love the attention.
Janie is an avid quilter, making both hand quilted and machine quilted quilts.   She has many for sale,
in various sizes from crib to double bed to wall hanging, or table runner size.  Working in mainly
cottons, she loves the whole process from the designing and colour selection phase, through the
construction and quilting to the finished product.    She takes custom orders and will design a quilt to
fit your decor and taste.   Beautiful quilts are heirlooms that can make wonderful gifts to be passed
from generation to generation.  Commemorate a special occasion with the giving of a special quilt.
Springtime is a time of new growth and newborns.  Janie brings in a newborn Hereford calf during an
early spring snow as the calf's mother follows.  Miles, a Hereford bull calf enjoys the springtime sun.
The morning sun greets Faith, one of our Herefords, and her newborn calf a Hereford & Angus cross
heifer.  Most of our calving is in the early spring but new arrivals come throughout the year.
On Wallace Homestead farm we grow corn as a cash crop and hay to feed our cattle. All of our crops
are organically grown without any artificial fertilizers or insecticide and herbicide sprays. We use a
vintage 1940 Farmall H tractor to cultivate the field corn.  Even though the Farmall H is an antique
classic tractor it still has to earn its keep on the farm. In the right picture, Janie is weeding in our
organic garden which supplies our family and visitors with fresh wholesome vegetables.
Hay grown on our farm consisting of Timothy, Alfalfa, Red Clover and Orchid grass is the primary
winter diet of our cattle.  Janie rakes a first cutting of Timothy as some late timothy hay is baled and
in the far right picture alfalfa is ready to unload from the automatic bale wagon into the hay mow.
Wildlife abounds in the mountain farmlands of Bradford and Sullivan Counties.  Whitetail deer
frequently pay us a visit browsing in our front and back yards most every evening.  In the center
picture,  a newborn fawn found along one of our fence rows awaits its mother to return from
foraging in the woods.  Pictured far right is Rascal, the raccoon, making his daily raid on the cats
food.
Fall is time for harvest! Oats is used as a cover crop when establishing new hay fields and is
harvested as part of our cash crop.  We use a vintage 1940's Allis Chalmers 66 combine to harvest
our oats. Corn is harvested for bio-fuel production. We always skim several bags of corn off the
elevator as well as leaving a few rows standing in the field for wildlife winter survival food.

Winters in the Endless Mountains region are long but enjoyable providing extra time for rest,
reflexion, and planning for the new year to come.  Cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating,
sledding & tobogganing , and hunting sports are favorite activities to the past time away.  With rest
and recreation also comes daily chores of tending to the winter herd and performing maintenance
on buildings and equipment.
